Standard Distributing Company is a full service wholesale beer distributor based in New Castle, Delaware, with a branch office in Dover. A family business now in its 4th generation, Standard Distributing is a socially responsible and environmentally conscious company that sets impressive green goals for itself. When it decided to look into energy savings for its main New Castle facility, Standard Distributing looked to Aelux to provide the best solution for energy efficient warehouse lighting and carbon reduction.
CHALLENGE
Standard Distributing’s New Castle warehouse utilized high-heat, low-efficiency 400W metal halide lamps in its extensive freezer area; these lamps were not only an ineffective and expensive source of lighting, but also contributed to increased HVAC costs.
SOLUTION
Aelux’s thorough facilities audit determined that a lighting retrofit would result in significant savings. Our expert team converted the freezer area lighting from metal halides to state-of-the-art, 4-lamp T5 fixtures with half the wattage of the metal halides, resulting in less heat, improved light and considerable HVAC saving. The return on investment from the significant energy costs was dramatic. Every area of the facility benefited from the lighting overhaul—the new lighting also improved the appearance and overall working conditions of the facility.
The company realized an impressive 67% annual cost savings, an average electric savings of $31,381, a total energy reduction of 239,624 kWh, and an annual decrease of 490,031 pounds of CO2, equivalent to removing 41 cars from the road or planting 5,700 trees annually. Further, Standard Distributing enjoyed EPACT deductions with a net value of over $19,000.
