An Aging Building Gets an Energy Facelift and a Brighter Future, with Energy Savings of More Than 32%

The Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA) is one of the Philadelphia region’s largest private, non-profit organizations, improving the quality of life for over 100,000 older or disabled Philadelphians annually since 1973, through a variety of services and programs. CHALLENGE

With offices in one of downtown Philadelphia’s older buildings, PCA’s lighting consisted of older type incandescent lamps, halogen lamps and fluorescent fixtures using high-wattage lamps, as well as a large number of incandescent exit signs, all of which were energy inefficient and very costly. Aelux immediately saw that a lighting retrofit was the best solution to provide considerable energy savings and optimal lighting.

SOLUTION

Aelux audited the 500,000 square foot, 5-story building and retrofitted 1,400 older T8 fixtures with new lower wattage lamps, and new, highly energy-efficient ballasts. New occupancy sensors were added to further save energy in unoccupied areas. 57 halogen and incandescent lamps were replaced with compact fluorescent lamps, and 32 incandescent Exit signs were replaced with LEDs. The improvement in lighting efficiency was apparent immediately, with the reduction of 98,331 kWh, along with the corresponding 32% yearly cost savings of $15,733. The environmental impact of the decrease of 198,924 pounds of CO₂ is the equivalent of 17 cars removed from the road, or 2,314 trees planted annually. An added benefit is that the annual savings from the lighting retrofit will enable PCA to provide even more services for the elderly and disabled in years to come.
