CHALLENGE

Lane Steel,  a Pennsylvania steel manufacturing company, has 6 buildings with a total of 200,000 square feet that required a lighting upgrade to achieve  optimum lighting efficiency and lower energy costs.  They operate on a 5-day, 14 or 18 hour cycle and therefore benefited from energy-efficient sensors.

SOLUTION

Aelux developed a retrofit upgrade solution utilizing T5HO fixtures with occupancy sensor technology which provides light only when needed, and dual sensor technology for maximized ambient light through a process called daylight harvesting. Daylight harvesting uses sensors to detect daylight levels from windows, skylights, etc. to  proportionately adjust the electric lighting output, further reducing energy costs.

In this particular installation, our team also had to consider  overhead cranes used by Lane to move steel rolls, leaving 480v exposed wiring, making the installation more difficult and dangerous. However, our experienced team has the expertise, safety knowledge and capability to handle unusual and/or complex installations in a timely manner.

The result was a 67% energy savings with a $4,000 monthly reduction in energy costs, and overall annual savings of $35,871. The expected total energy reduction was 430,347 kWh, with a CO2 reduction of 870,592 pounds, equal to the removal of 73 cars from the road or the planting of 10,126 trees. The dramatic improvement in lighting can be seen in the “Before” and “After” photos taken at the main facility, resulting in safety and productivity benefits.
