CHALLENGE

Herr Foods is a leader in the snack food industry, beginnning in 1946 as a small, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, potato chip manufacturer and expanding over the years to include over 340 snack items. Herr’s needed to improve light levels in their current, extensive location in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, and wanted a one-lamp type approach throughout the processing plant. They turned to Aelux to create a unique solution to meet their needs.

SOLUTION

Herr Foods is a complicated 24/7, food-grade processing plant, with offices, a car and truck garage area and a Visitor Center, encompassing 420,000 square feet in total. Aelux accommodated Herr’s complex schedule to complete the project in the processing areas, installing an upgrade utilizing T-8 fluorescents in all fixtures throughout, doubling the light levels while reducing the kWh virtually by half. Herr’s had a total reduction of 649,306 kWh, and a decrease of 1,333,775 pounds of CO2, the equivalent of 113 cars removed from the road, or 15,497 trees planted, with an annual cost savings of $67,064. Herr’s was extremely happy with the results.
