Prescription for Healthy Energy Savings of More Than 60% at Multiple Locations

Henry Schein, Inc. is the largest distributor of healthcare products and services to medical, dental, and veterinary office-based practitioners, serving over 600,000 customers worldwide for over 78 years. When Henry Schein, Inc. decided to upgrade lighting in its multiple warehouse and distribution locations in Pennsylvania, Texas and Indiana, the company selected Aelux to design a solution to its energy efficient lighting needs.

CHALLENGE

With facilities in different areas, totaling 1,367,184 square feet, it was important to analyze and design the ideal lighting solution for each area within each specific location. The majority of the existing fixtures used in all of the locations were metal halides, mostly using 1000W lamps, a highly inefficient and costly choice.

Aelux immediately identified the potential for huge energy savings. Aside from lighting considerations, Aelux had to take into account the health product nature of the business and our need to be especially careful during the installation, respecting the hygienic nature of the business.

SOLUTION

After performing a thorough energy audit in each Henry Schein, Inc. facility, Aelux photometric experts designed layouts that replaced the outdated metal halide fixtures with fewer but far more efficient 6-lamp, T8 and T5 fixtures in each of the multiple facilities, using occupancy sensors to further increase efficiency. Mindful of the health product nature of the company, Aelux’s professional team took extra precautions to be meticulously clean throughout the installation process.

There was an immediate dramatic improvement in lighting levels and an equally dramatic total reduction of 2,806,035 kWh, and a decrease of 5,424,393 pounds of CO2, the equivalent of 453 cars removed from the road, or 63,093 trees planted annually. Equally impressive is the more than 60% annual cost savings of $257,790; in addition to which, different locations qualified for substantial rebates and EPACT deductions totaling over $90,000 that were just what the doctor ordered!
